I took the "sold out" foliage train ride with a group of 7 ranging from toddler to senior citizen. Overall, I'd say it was a nice time but not all that we expected. The last passenger train car was more than half empty and there was plenty of room in the dining car.
The entire operation is run by volunteers and the train/station shows every bit of its age. The interior of the train had not been lovingly restored but it is functional. There is a bathroom in every car. The dining car had a "women only" bathroom that is completely carpeted (yikes!) with a large open window next to the loo. So if you are using the facilities while the train is passing a road crossing or parking lot, it's quite a view. It was still cleaner than the other bathrooms.
As for handicap accessibility, it is sorely lacking. There is one handicap parking space in the parking lot next to the station. The parking lot is all dirt and the day I was there it was muddy with puddles. The station itself is winding, multileveled and has very narrow (28"?) doorways that I don't believe are even close to passing a wheelchair through. There are three steps that they asked people in walkers to transfer for. Next to the steps was a wheelchair lift but even the most disabled were not offered the use of it. Perhaps the key to operate it was missing or it was out of service. There was no one to ask in the station. Most troubling is that there is absolutely no thought given to boarding handicap passengers. One woman seated in a walker waited in line and was sent to the last car because all the previous cards were filled. Her party struggled to get her off the train because her walker had great difficulty between cars and through the narrow aisles. It seems there should be some preferential seating for handicap riders.
The view also left something to be desired. I imagined by the description on the website that there would be rolling fields and follow the Susquehanna River. There were some fleeting moments you could see a creek, some farm land and and occasional house but for the most part it seemed like an upclose view of forest. The tween/teens were bored about 45 minutes into the trip but that doesn't say much. The younger kids wanted to visit the open car but that was ruined by a throng of smokers. It's hard to enjoy the passing landscape when several smokers are upwind of your asthmatic child. We retreated to our seats where you can at least open the windows partly.
